5-Team Bracket

The complete 5-team single elimination bracket. Because 5 isn't a power of two, the top 3 seeds open with a bye — then it's 4 games across 3 rounds to crown a champion.

5-Team Bracket Structure

Here is the round-by-round structure with standard seeding. Number your teams 1–5 from strongest to weakest (or draw numbers from a hat for a random bracket) — the byes go to the top seeds, and byes only ever apply to round 1.

Quarterfinals

  • Seed 1 — bye
  • Seed 4 vs Seed 5
  • Seed 2 — bye
  • Seed 3 — bye

Semifinals

2 games — the 3 bye seeds enter here against the round 1 winners.

Final

1 game — the championship match.

How a 5-Team Bracket Works

Single elimination brackets are built on powers of two — 4, 8, 16, 32 — so a 5-team field plays inside a 8-slot draw. The 3 missing slots become first-round byes: the top 3 seeds skip round 1 and advance straight to the next round while everyone else plays in. Handing the byes to the strongest teams is the standard convention — it rewards seeding and keeps the most lopsided first-round matchups off the schedule.

However the byes fall, the total game count never changes: every game eliminates exactly one team, and 5 teams means 4 eliminations — so a 5-team single elimination bracket is always 4 games. Add an optional third-place match and it's 5. If nobody in your event has a ranking, draw seeds at random; the structure above stays exactly the same.

Want more games and a second chance for everyone? Run the same field through a double elimination bracket (8–9 games) or a round robin (10 games) instead. For a knockout event, the free bracket maker below handles the byes and seeding for you — enter 5 names and the bracket is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many games are in a 5-team bracket?

A 5-team single elimination bracket has 4 games — every game eliminates one team, and 5 teams require 4 eliminations. With an optional third-place match the total is 5 games.

How do byes work with 5 teams?

5 teams play inside a 8-slot bracket, so 3 teams receive a first-round bye and advance directly to the next round. By convention the byes go to the top seeds. Byes only apply to round 1 — from round 2 on, every remaining team plays.

How many rounds does a 5-team bracket take?

3 rounds. Quarterfinals (1 game plus 3 byes), Semifinals (2 games), Final (1 game). Most 5-team events finish in a single session.
