12-Team Bracket
The complete 12-team single elimination bracket. Because 12 isn't a power of two, the top 4 seeds open with a bye — then it's 11 games across 4 rounds to crown a champion.
12-Team Bracket Structure
Here is the round-by-round structure with standard seeding. Number your teams 1–12 from strongest to weakest (or draw numbers from a hat for a random bracket) — the byes go to the top seeds, and byes only ever apply to round 1.
Round 1
- Seed 1 — bye
- Seed 8 vs Seed 9
- Seed 4 — bye
- Seed 5 vs Seed 12
- Seed 2 — bye
- Seed 7 vs Seed 10
- Seed 3 — bye
- Seed 6 vs Seed 11
Quarterfinals
4 games — the 4 bye seeds enter here against the round 1 winners.
Semifinals
2 games between the remaining teams.
Final
1 game — the championship match.
How a 12-Team Bracket Works
Single elimination brackets are built on powers of two — 4, 8, 16, 32 — so a 12-team field plays inside a 16-slot draw. The 4 missing slots become first-round byes: the top 4 seeds skip round 1 and advance straight to the next round while everyone else plays in. Handing the byes to the strongest teams is the standard convention — it rewards seeding and keeps the most lopsided first-round matchups off the schedule.
However the byes fall, the total game count never changes: every game eliminates exactly one team, and 12 teams means 11 eliminations — so a 12-team single elimination bracket is always 11 games. Add an optional third-place match and it's 12. If nobody in your event has a ranking, draw seeds at random; the structure above stays exactly the same.
Want more games and a second chance for everyone? Run the same field through a double elimination bracket (22–23 games) or a round robin (66 games) instead. For a knockout event, the free bracket maker below handles the byes and seeding for you — enter 12 names and the bracket is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many games are in a 12-team bracket?
A 12-team single elimination bracket has 11 games — every game eliminates one team, and 12 teams require 11 eliminations. With an optional third-place match the total is 12 games.
How do byes work with 12 teams?
12 teams play inside a 16-slot bracket, so 4 teams receive a first-round bye and advance directly to the next round. By convention the byes go to the top seeds. Byes only apply to round 1 — from round 2 on, every remaining team plays.
How many rounds does a 12-team bracket take?
4 rounds. Round 1 (4 games plus 4 byes), Quarterfinals (4 games), Semifinals (2 games), Final (1 game). Most 12-team events finish in a single session.
