How to Run a Softball Tournament

Softball is the home of double elimination. Slow-pitch and fast-pitch weekend tournaments almost universally use it because a single loss to a hot bat shouldn't end your weekend — every team gets a trip through the losers' bracket before they're out. The format produces the classic "if necessary" game: if a team that came up through the losers' bracket beats the undefeated team in the final, the two play one more deciding game, because the winners'-bracket team hadn't lost yet. Build that into your schedule so the final slot isn't a surprise.

For larger weekend tournaments — 16, 24, or 32 teams — the common structure is pool play seeding into a bracket. Saturday is round robin pool games that don't eliminate anyone but set the seeds; Sunday is a single or double elimination championship bracket using those seeds. This guarantees every team at least three or four games on day one regardless of results, which is what travel teams and rec leagues are paying entry fees for. For a smaller one-day event of 8 teams, straight double elimination is simpler and finishes in a day.

Seeding comes from pool-play record (wins first, then run differential, then head-to-head as tiebreaks) or from a prior season's standings for league tournaments. Spread the top seeds across the bracket so the two strongest teams can only meet in the final. Decide your tiebreak rules and run-rule (e.g. 10 runs after 5 innings) before the first pitch and put them on the bracket sheet — disputes over a pool tiebreak at 9pm under the lights are how tournaments run late.

The operational headache at a multi-field complex is always the same: which team is on which diamond, and who's up next. With pool games and bracket games running across four or six fields, the scorer's table becomes a bottleneck. Post the live bracket and pool standings on a screen and share a link so every team can see their next game and field from the dugout, instead of walking to the table to ask after every game.

Double Elimination, Built In

Rise tracks the winners' and losers' brackets side by side and advances teams automatically as you enter scores — including the "if necessary" deciding game when a losers'-bracket team wins the final. No more redrawing the losers' side by hand every time a favorite drops a game.

Across a six-field complex, the live bracket and pool standings show on a screen at the table and on every coach's phone, so the next matchup and field are never a question. See how double elimination works or see all planned features.

Frequently Asked Questions

What format do softball tournaments use?

Double elimination is the standard for softball — every team has to lose twice to be eliminated, which produces the classic "if necessary" final. Larger weekend tournaments (16+ teams) usually run pool play on day one to set seeds, then a single or double elimination championship bracket on day two.

How many games in a double elimination softball bracket?

An 8-team double elimination bracket runs 14-15 games (the extra game is the "if necessary" final). A 16-team bracket is 30-31 games. Because softball games take longer than most sports, plan two or more diamonds running simultaneously so a 16-team event finishes in a day.

How do you seed a softball tournament?

Seed from pool-play record — wins first, then run differential, then head-to-head as tiebreaks — or from prior league standings. Place the top seeds on opposite sides of the bracket so the two best teams can only meet in the final. For a casual event with no records, Rise can draw the bracket randomly.

Can I create a softball bracket right now?

Yes. Rise's free bracket maker creates a single elimination softball bracket instantly — add team names, choose seeded or random ordering, and share the link with every coach. For day-one seeding games, use the round robin generator. No account required.
